Maine Lines

It’s raining today. That’s okay. What do we think this is, San Diego? But only today, the forecasters promise.

Yesterday
Last night the sky turned a brilliant magenta. Rivaling the colors of a Tucson sunset.

Today
Today everything has gone from Technicolor to black and white. It is like the Wizard of Oz in reverse. Only the trees provide contrast, gray skies on grey ocean. Gray deck chairs dripping.

Yesterday we tried to watch Comey. But we were soon distracted by the beautiful views from our balcony, by the sound of the wind giving the leafy trees a bad hair day. By the astounding sounds of silence and absence of people. You can find that in Maine. My California friend seems very much amazed.

The Bayview provides a car and driver for all of our outings.  We asked to go to “town” to lunch. Up on the roof at Cherrystones (no website). We were battered about by the gentlest of strong winds. My hat kept flying off like something in a Leslie Caron movie. Off to the adorable West End Drug store complete with a fountain and 20 cent coffee, holding the price from 100 years ago when it opened.

Siesta time every afternoon. Siesta is not much of a Maine term, they would probably call it “sies-ter.” And an afternoon of Comey condensation by commentators spewed for hours under the label of “breaking news.” I think it broke about 10 a.m. and had since been fixed.

Getting our fix at Side Street
On our table on National Best Friends Day

Dinner at the Side Street CafĂ© whose service was super fast. We were like methadone addicts there to get our daily dose…of lobster. Lobster in bisque, lobster piled on mac and cheese.

In preparation for vacation eating in New England we interviewed everyone about their favorite ice cream shop. All fingers pointed at Mt. Desert Ice Cream. Known for its exotic flavors such as basil ice cream and candied grapefruit peel.  I don’t know why I bother with such places, I only ever want chocolate.

Rain, rain stay stay. Just for today. There are yoga classes to attend, massages to get, books to read, movies to see.

Bayview granola--deserves to be put on the map
